Topic: Number Sense (Addition of Decimals)

 

Grade 5 (2nd  Quarter)

 

Goal: The students should be able to demonstrate understanding of the addition operation involving decimals

 

Objectives:
At the end of the session, the students should be able to:

  1. define decimal numbers;

  2. perform addition to decimal numbers; and

  3. solve routine or non-routine problems involving addition of decimal numbers including money using appropriate problem solving strategies and tools.

Materials:

LCD projector, pen, paper, handouts, manila paper, tape, number cards

Resources:

 

Motivation:

  1. The class will be divided into 5.

  2. Each group will receive 10 different set of whole numbers from 1-50.

  3. Recalling their past lesson about addition of whole numbers, the students will formulate as many sum as they can solve from the 10 numbers they have within 3-5 minutes.

  4. After 5 minutes, the students will explain their work.

 

Lesson Procedure:

  1. The teacher will give a brief recall about addition of whole numbers based on the motivational activity.

  2. The teacher will then define what a decimal number is.

  3. The teacher will demonstrate the steps on how to add decimals numbers alone and with whole numbers.

  4. With the same grouping in the motivational activity, each group will flip the cards they have received at the start of the session and will found out 10 different set of decimal numbers. With the same instruction, each group will formulate as many sum as they can solve from the 10 decimal numbers they have within 5-8 minutes. After 8 minutes, each group will present and explain their work.
