Bar Graph

Topic: Statistics and Probability

Grade 4 4th Quarter

Goal: The learners should be able to demonstrate understanding of the concepts of bar graphs and simple experiments.

Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

  • collect data on two variables using any source;

  • organize data in tabular form and presents them in a single/double horizontal or vertical bar graph;

  • interpret data presented in different kinds of bar graphs (vertical/ horizontal, single/double bars); and

  • solve routine and non-routine problems using data presented in a single or double-bar graph.

Materials and Resources:

  • Manila paper, pictures, marker, laptop, and projector

Motivation

Activity Title: Fix me!

Mechanics:

  • The class should be divided into 4 groups. Each group should have 5 to 6 members only.

  • The teacher will give a puzzle that will give them clue about the lesson.

  • The task of each student is to fix the puzzle and tell what the clue is.

  • The group who will first got the clue correctly will be given prizes.

By doing this activity, the students will have an idea about the lesson for that day.

Lesson Procedure

  1. Before starting the lesson, the teacher will ask some questions that the students need to answer.

Guide Questions:

  • Do you have any idea about bar graphs?

  • How do we used bar graphs in real life situations?

By answering the questions, the teacher will have an idea about the students’ background knowledge. Then, she will connect those ideas to introduce the topic or lesson.

  3. In the discussion, the students will listen about the steps in presenting and interpreting data in different kinds of bar graph. (vertical/ horizontal, single/double bars)

  4. Then, after discussing it shortly, the students will play an activity that will let them practice presenting and interpreting data in different kinds of bar graphs.

Activity Title: Sketch it!

Mechanics:

  • The teacher will give some examples of data in the class.

  • Each student is given a task which is to present and interpret the data in different kinds of bar graphs.

  • By doing this activity, the students will be able to practice their skill in presenting and interpreting data in different kinds of bar graphs.

  5.  After playing the activity, the teacher will give some real-life word problems and show how it can be solved by using data presented in a single or double-bar graph.

  6. Then, she will play another activity to let the students practice solving real-life word problems related to bar graph.

Activity Title: Bar Game!

Mechanics:

  • The class should be divided into 4 groups. Each group should have 5 to 6 members only.

  • The task of each group is to solve the 5 real-life word problems related to bar graph.

  • The challenge in this game is they are only given 1 minute to answer each question.

  • The group who will have the correct answer will be given 2 points.

  • The group who will have the highest number of points will be the winner of the game and will be given prizes.

  7. For the “Assessment”, the teacher will use the performance task to test if they really learned all the lesson.

  8. To end the lesson, the teacher will let the students share what they’ve learned by writing it in a flashcard. The students can also share their opinions or insights about the lesson.

  • By doing this activity, the teacher will know the students’ learnings, opinions and insights about the lesson.
