Changes the Material undergo
Title: Changes that Materials Undergo
Grade 4, Quarter 1st
Goal: The student should be able to apply their understandings about the changes in materials that are useful or harmful to our daily life and to one’s environment.
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
-
describe changes in solid materials when they are bent, pressed, or cut;
-
describe changes in properties of materials when exposed to certain conditions such as temperature; and
-
distinguish if the changes in materials are useful or harmful to one’s environment.
Materials
Projected and non-projected media

Activity:
Paper cup, straw, cloth, rubber band, colored paper, plastic ruler, bread and clay
Lesson Procedure
-
The teacher will greet the students and ask them to pick up all the pieces of paper under his/her chair and arrange their sit properly.
-
The teacher will give a motivational activity entitled “FREEZE”. The students will create a tableau or scene.
-
The teacher will give the mechanics of the activity
-
The Class will be divided into 2 groups.
-
The two groups make still images with their bodies to represent a scene.
-
A scene that the two groups must formed should be connected to the situations/pictures that the teacher shown on the board.
-
The two groups will compete each to other and able formed a scene within 30 seconds.
-
After 30 seconds, you heard the word FREEZE as a signal for them to stop.
-
After the motivational activity, the teacher will discuss that all of the Pictures shown are the examples of materials and these materials undergo change.
-
The teacher will give a short background about the CHANGES THAT MATERIALS UNDERGO
-
The teacher will define matter and that matter undergo Physical and Chemical change
-
After the short background of the topic the students will be required to keep a KWLE chart to make reflections about his/her learning (reflective learning)
-
The teacher will use it as feedback to identify if the teaching strategies of the teacher are effective or not and as a reference for her to make a reflective teaching as well.
-
The teacher asks the students to write what they already KNOW about the topic.
-
The teacher will discuss the topic
What is matter?
It is anything that makes up any object, occupies space, and has mass
CHANGES THAT MATERIALS UNDERGO
Physical Change and Chemical Change
Question:
What do you think are the importance of distinguishing the materials that undergo Physical and chemical change?
To distinguish if the Physical and chemical change are useful or harmful to one’s life and environment.
Physical Change
-
No new substance is created, although the matter may take different form.
-
A change in physical properties of matter
-
Changes may be reversible, especially phase changes
What is Solid?
A solid has definite shape and volume. You can hold solids.
Examples: table, chair, pencil
Properties of Solid
-
Size
-
Shape
-
Color
-
Texture
-
Weight
-
The teacher will discuss that when a material undergo physical change its physical properties or appearance will changed.
-
The teacher will discuss that solid materials have many ways to undergo change
-
The teacher will give an activity to the students for them to discover the some ways of changing the solid materials.
-
While doing the activity the teacher will asks her students to write what are they WONDERING or what they want to know while doing the activity
-
The teacher will give each of the group 5 minutes to perform the given activity.
ACTIVITY
The class will be divided into 2 groups. Each group will have materials and they will collaborate to each other to perform the activity.
Question: What are some ways of changing solid materials?
Group 1 Group 3
-
Rubber band - Hair clip
-
Cloth - Bottle cup
-
Clay - Colored paper
-
Paper cup - Stick
Group 2 Group 4
-
Ribbon - Colored paper
-
Plastic ruler - Straw
-
Straw - Bread
-
Cloth - Plastic ruler
Question:
Are there new materials formed when solid materials undergo PHYSICAL CHANGE?
Solid materials can be changed through many ways
Such actions may change the materials size, shape, texture, color, and other characteristics/properties
-
What happened to the solid Materials when they are bent, pressed or cut?
-may change in size and shape
2. Is there new material formed when solid material was bent, pressed or cut?
- No new material is formed.
- Only physical appearance of the materials is changed.
Changes in the Properties of the Materials when Exposed to Different Temperature
What is heating?
Make or become hot or warm
Changes in the Properties of the Materials when Exposed to Hot Temperature
-
What happens to butter when heated?
-
What are the changes occur in the appearance of the material?
-
How would you describe the changes that happened to materials when heated?
When materials are heated, they changed their size, shape, and texture. They also change their forms. When heated
Changes in the Properties of Materials when Exposed to Cold Temperature
What is cooling?
-
Cause to become less hot.
-
reducing the temperature
-
-
What happens to butter when cooled?
-
What are the changes occur in the appearance of the material?
-
How would you describe the changes that happened to materials when cooled?
The materials butter changed back to its form from liquid to solid when it’s cooled. It also changes shape, size and texture.
CHEMICAL CHANGE
-
Involves the production of a new substance.
-
The product of chemical change cannot be brought back to its original state by ordinary means.
-
The new substance formed is entirely different from the original substance.
Examples:
-
After the lesson the teacher will asks one representative per group to share what they have LEARNED in the discussion.
-
The teacher will sum up the lesson and give 10 items quiz to assess the students learning
-
After that, the teacher will give the assignment and the performance task of the students.
Assessment:
Direction: Copy and answer
Write if it is a Physical change and if it is a Chemical change. Write your answer on your ½ crosswise.
-
Boiling of water 6. Burning Tires
-
Cutting wood 7. Breaking Glass
-
Spoiling of food 8. Rusting metal
-
Cooking 9. Folding paper
-
Curling of hair 10.Melting of chocolate
Performance Tasks:
Assignment:
-
Reflective Journal is a perfect avenue to express your thoughts, ideas and experiences in the class. You can write about a positive and negative things/ happenings that you experienced in this class.
-
You can also write the topics that you find it difficult, the topics that you learned, the different activities that you performed and its importance.
-
The students will keep reflective journal (Big note book) and they will write freely about their experience in the class every day and will they passed it weekly.
