Title: The Sun

Grade 4, 4th Quarter

Goal: The learners should be able to demonstrate understanding of the sun as the main source of heat and light on earth and realize the importance of it in daily lives.

Objectives:

 At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

  1. describe the changes in the position and length of shadows in the surroundings as the position of the Sun changes;

  2. describe the role of the Sun in the water cycle; and

  3. describe the effects of the Sun.

Materials and Resources:

  • Cartolina, flashcards, scotch tape, marker, laptop, and projector

Motivation:

Activity Title: Find the Clues!

 

Mechanics:

  • The teacher will present a crossword puzzle that will give them some clues about the lesson.

  • The task of each student is to find those clues and tell what those are.

  • The students who will be able to find those clues will be given prizes.

 

By doing this activity, the students will have an idea about the lesson for that day.

 

Lesson Procedure:

  1. Before starting the lesson, the teacher will ask some questions that the students need to answer.

 

Guide Questions:

  • How does Sun change its position and length of shadows in our surroundings?

  • How does Sun affect us?

  • Do you think Sun is important to our lives? And, why?

 

By answering the questions, the teacher will have an idea about the students’ background knowledge. Then, she will connect those ideas to introduce the topic or lesson.

  2. In the discussion, the students will listen about the changes in the position and length of shadows in the surroundings as the position of the Sun changes.

  3. Then, after discussing it shortly, the students will play an activity that will show the Effects of sun.

Activity Title: 1 2 3 Action!

Mechanics:

  • The class should be divided into 4 groups. Each group should have 5 to 6 members only.

  • Each group is given a task where they need to make a “Skit” that will show the effects of Sun.

  • The Skit must be only 3 to 5 minutes.

 

  4.  After playing the activity, the teacher will discuss the Effects of Sun.

  5. To introduce the next topic, the teacher will play another activity.

Activity Title: Make a Concept Map!

Mechanics:

  • The teacher will present a concept map in the class that will show the Importance of Sun.

  • Each student will be given a task where they will write their ideas about what they know about the Importance of Sun.

  • The students who will participate in this activity will be given prizes.

  6. Then, she will proceed to the last topic which is the Importance of Sun.

  8. For the “Assessment”, the teacher will use the performance task to test if they really learned all the lesson.

  9. To end the lesson, the teacher will let the students share what they’ve learned by writing it in a flashcard. The students can also share their opinions or insights about the lesson. 

  • By doing this activity, the teacher will know the students’ learnings, opinions and insights about the lesson.
