Volcanic Eruption
Topic: Volcanic Eruption: A Force that Affect Changes on the Earth’s Surface
Grade 6 (4th Quarter)
Goal: The students should be able to demonstrate the awareness on the different measures during volcanic eruption.
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
-
identify what is a volcanic eruption;
-
describe the changes on the earth’s surface as a result of volcanic eruptions;
-
enumerate the effects of volcanic eruptions;
-
discover what to do before, during, and after a volcanic eruption; and
-
create a restoration plan after volcanic eruption.

Motivational Activity:
Detective on the Go!
-
The teacher will divide the class into three groups.
-
Each group will receive an envelope that contains pictures connected to the case presented in the class.
-
Within 2 minutes, each group should solve the case based on the evidences shown in the pictures puzzle.
-
After 2 minutes, one representative of each group will present his/her group’s work by explaining it like a detective!
Case:
Anna was a 5 year old child living in Manila. One day, her family went into a place where Anna was not familiar with. When she looked around the place, she was shocked to see a very unpleasant sight before her. She asked her brother Syrel about what happened to the place. Syrel explained that something happened to the place that resulted to the unpleasant scenario. The two took some photos of the place. Determine the possible causes that changed the place using the pictures that Ana and her brother took.
[lamdg1] Lesson Procedure
-
The teacher will present a case [lamdg2] identifying volcanic eruption. (Motivational Activity part)
-
The teacher will ask the students to recall what a volcanic eruption is based on what happened in Albay province connecting it to their previous lesson.
-
The teacher will group the class into 3. Each group will receive a picture showing different scenarios during a volcanic eruption. The students will enumerate what are the effects/changes of a volcanic eruption based on the pictures. After 3-5 minutes, the students will present their work and the teacher will provide additional questions during the presentation
4. The teacher will then summarize what are the effects of a volcanic eruption.
5. With the same grouping, the teacher will give each group a case. The students will work as a team to construct possible solutions to solve each case study within 5-8 minutes. After 5-8 minutes, each group will present their case study and discuss their possible solutions.
Case Study #1: Before a volcanic eruption
Clariecel is living peacefully in Albay. One day she was curious when everybody was talking about the current condition of the Mt. Mayon. When she turned on the television, the news flashed the headline “Mt. Mayon ash fall rises experts believe that a major eruption can occur in few days.” She and her family were shocked. But as Clariecel studied the effect of volcanic eruption, what should she and her family do before the phenomenon?
Case Study #2: During a volcanic eruption
Jocelyn is living on her own in Albay. While she was sweeping dirt on her house, an authority came to her saying she should evacuate her house in the incoming eruption of the Mt. Mayon. She thought her place is far in the danger zone and decided that she should just stay in her house. But after a few days, the Mt. Mayon erupted and the ash falls can reach her house! What should Jocelyn do during a volcanic eruption?
Case Study #3: After a volcanic eruption
After the Mt. Mayon erupted, Elmira stayed in her house and done the right thing during the eruption. When she felt that it ended, what must she do?
